At a time when there’s a lot of talk about the hidden gems of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, Sherkin Island in Roaringwater Bay has something genuinely unexpected to offer.
The West Cork island is a thriving hub for artists: you’ll find gallery spaces in kitchens and bedrooms, as well as garden workshops and the island’s community hall here.
A visual art degree programme is even delivered on Sherkin Island by the School of Art, Design and Printing at the Dublin Institute of Technology.
Now as part of the Taste of West Cork Festival 2015 – and following on from a summer of local exhibitions – the islanders are running a day tour which will take you into Sherkin’s studios to meet the artists and see them at work.
It’s a great opportunity to connect with Sherkin’s creative community, and you’ll quickly see why people are inspired by the landscape of the island and the quality of West Cork’s light.
Spaces on the 12th September tour are limited, and early booking is advisable. Online booking is available, or contact Aisling on 087 7669657.
