Lonehort Battery Tours

Guided tours of Lonehort Battery on Bere Island take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer.

Lonehort Battery, which was operational during World War One, is the largest of seven gun batteries built on Bere Island by the British Admiralty.

The Admiralty wanted to protect its fleet when it lay at anchor in Berehaven harbour. It is estimated that, when the British fleet dropped anchor in the harbour, the local population could swell by up to 13,000 men.

This guided tour with island guides will introduce you to Lonehort Battery and the fascinating military history of Bere Island, which lies at the head of Bantry Bay between the Beara and Sheep’s Head peninsulas.

Meet outside the main gate of Lonehort Battery, Ardaragh, at 1pm. Lonehort is signposted from Rerrin village on Bere Island (see the island map at https://westcorkislands.com/bere-island).

To arrange a tour outside these times, contact Barry Hanley on 086 884  5709 or Teresa Hall 086 198 1541.

The guided tour costs €10 per adult.
