Changing Perspectives is an intriguing joint exhibition of work by photographer Robbie Murphy and painter Jo Ashby
Both Robbie and Jo are inspired by the land and seascapes of Sherkin Island in West Cork’s Roaringwater Bay. The show is an exploration of the ways these two Sherkin Island artists record their responses in their very different media to the place where they live and work.
Jo has divided her life between studios in London and Sherkin Island for over 20 years. Jo’s work has always reflected her love of the sea and coast – Cornwall and Wales in her early career; Sherkin and the coastline of West Cork and Kerry for the past two decades: “My paintings are the distillation of repeated observation of island views, landscapes and details of nature I know and love so well. There are repeated motifs in my work as I try to capture the many different lights and moods.”
She trained at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford University and Goldsmith’s College, University of London. She has exhibited widely in Ireland, the UK and Europe, and is a regular exhibiting artist with several well-established galleries. She has work in private and public collections in Ireland, Europe, the UK, Canada and the United States.
Robbie’s family moved to Sherkin shortly after he was born, and he works on the island, farming oysters, but he is also an enthusiastic photographer of Sherkin – its landscapes, the changing weather, and its flora and fauna.
