This July, Bere Island marks the centenary of the US Navy’s time on Bere Island during the First World War
Throughout the weekend an exhibition of photographs of the US Navy on Bere Island will take place in the Bere Island Heritage Centre.
Saturday 1st July: 2.00pm at the Lecture Theatre, Rerrin
Military historian and conflict archaeologist Damien Shiels will give a talk on the presence of the US Navy in Cork in 1917. A Ferry will leave the Pontoon at 1.00pm and return at 4.30pm. The Lecture Theatre is a short walk from where the ferry lands.
Saturday 1st July: Time TBC at the Heritage Centre
Cúigear – will play a concert of Irish traditional music, and will feature a selection of songs popular during World War One.
Sunday 2nd July: 3pm in the Heritage Centre
Bere Island historian Ted Sullivan will give a talk of the presence of the US Navy on Bere Island in 1917.
Other events including guided historical walks will also be included, and the programme for this weekend will be updated over the coming weeks. Watch this space!
