Refresh your senses at the Bere Island Music and Silence Festival on Bere Island this September, led by Laurence Freeman OSB – a leading thinker on mindfulness and meditation.
A Benedictine monk, Laurence Freeman says, “There is an urgent need today to recover the experience of the spiritual. Music opens that door for many, and meditation is the way in that it changes how we see the world.”
Over four days, local and international musicians will be gathering to perform, listen and reflect, combining musical concerts and workshops with optional periods of silent meditation. The festival provides an opportunity for both members of the public and musicians alike, to share their experiences, learn how to meditate and discover how meditation can enhance their creative lives.
Fr. Laurence, a native of the island, worked in banking, the UN and journalism before turning in his suit for the robes of a monk. He now travels widely teaching meditation, and is director of The World Community for Christian Meditation. He returns frequently to Bere Island where there is a regular meditation group, and where he often meditates with the children in the national school. He also leads a meditation retreat there for medical practitioners every September, and works with the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin. Music and meditation, he says, are both ways of healing.
The festival will include music & dance workshops, morning and evening music & meditation, talks and discussions, guided walks, evening dances and concerts, and local fresh food and drink.
